Algal Blooms

Algal blooms occur when colonies of algae. Simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater, grow out of control and produce toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals and birds. The human illnesses caused by harmful algal blooms, though rare, can be debilitating or even fatal.

Coral Bleaching

Coral Bleaching occurs when water is too warm, corals expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality.

Fish kill is the sudden and unexpected death of a number of fish or other aquatic animals such as crabs or prawns over a short period of time and often within a particular area in the wild.

Lionfish

Lionfish is a flourishing invasive species in Caribbean coastal waters with the potential to harm reef ecosystems. It is a top predator that competes for food and space and can also kill off helpful species such as algae-eating parrotfish, allowing seaweed to overtake the reefs. A mature female releases roughly two million eggs a year.

Mammal Stranding

Mammal Stranding occurs when a marine mammal is found on shore or in water too shallow for it to survive. This event is termed a "stranding". Some individuals strand by themselves or in groups (called a mass stranding).

Oil spills refer to the leakage of petroleum onto the surface of a large body of water. Oceanic oil spills are a major environmental problem, spills can harm sea creatures, ruin a day at the beach, and make seafood unsafe to eat.

Sargassum

Sargassum is a type of brown seaweed that can span spaces in the ocean or wash up on beaches. As it rots, it gives off hydrogen sulfide which has a very unpleasant odor, like rotten eggs. Although the seaweed itself cannot harm your health, tiny sea creatures that live in Sargassum can cause skin rashes and blisters.
